The Score to Obama's Infomercial

I wouldn't be doing my civic duty as a film score composer blog guy if I didn't take at least a few minutes to talk about the score to Obama's 30 minute special, American Stories, American Solutions.

Interestingly, the music was a prominent enough part of the production to get comments by the Republican pundits, who called it "overdramatic". Sure, whatever guys, and your explosive action-packed intro effects aren't over the top, either. I heard one of those anchors say it was "so lame and over-the-top like Field of Dreams".

Let's get this straight, the music was a direct take off from James Horner's score to A Beautiful Mind, not Field of Dreams. (James Horner also scored Field of Dreams - interesting how that works, huh?)

First, listen to Obama's infomercial. Just pay attention to the music and listen to the first 45 seconds of the flic.

Obama's a Theif!!! Terrorist!!!

Don't get your panties in a bunch, now. I've said this before and I'll say it again - film scoring is not about being original. It's not so much about how you say it - but it's all about what you're saying.

And in this case, choosing this music says a lot. It's a powerful risk that I wouldn't have thought to take - the musical message is so closely tied to the message in the narrative.

The music to A Beautiful Mind is heroic, tragic, noble, and personal. Most importantly, it gives the feeling that something important and has been lost. The movie A Beautiful Mind is precisely that; the story of a brilliant mathematician who develops a schizophrenia which ultimately tears his life apart (tragic and personal). His wife faithfully stays with him despite the danger to both herself and their child, even when faced with the overwhelming feeling that she has really lost her husband (noble and heroic).

The cool thing about musical themes and ideas is how flexible they are. Check this out:

The most important part of Obama's 30 minute special is that it is about the struggling American family. It's not really about Obama, it's not about his tax plan or his international policies, its not about attacking McCain or dispelling his associations with whatever BS Palin threw at him. It's about the struggle that individuals and families in America are facing - and the music played that tune impeccably.

The idea is that Americans at one time were noble and proud, but over time what we treasured began to fade away as we found ourselves unable to pay for health care, loosing our jobs, and loosing sons and daughters to wars (personal and tragic). Despite all of this, people in America continue to work hard and press on (noble and heroic), even though there is an overwhelming feeling that what we once had is slipping away. That's the message.

The most important part of the the entire concept is that the story is about the individuals in America, and the struggles they face. The music supports this clearly, intelligently, and emotionally.

That's good.

After that, watching a McCain ad will make you want to shoot yourself.

In fact, let's do that.

Here's my favorite McCain ad. Pay special attention to the music. I like how it's creepy and meant to scare you. I especially like the arabic influence. What does that say? It says that Arabs are looming and erie, that they are terrorists, Arabic music is terrorist music, and Obama is a terrorist - all lies. I was right, I do want to shoot myself. Arabic music totally got raped in that commercial.

Nice catch! Yeah I see stuff like that all the time. It takes a lot to realize how much music is "recycled" and be OK with it. As for the rest of the blog, I couldn't agree more. I'm glad to see that McCain's attempt to "condition" Americans to be culturally closed-minded has failed miserably.
