I voted.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know my last blog was a big rant about the millions of reasons why voting isn't really worth a damn. Don't get me wrong - voting is like believing in some odd religion that convinces you with all of its propaganda that your vote really does matter. I stand by my belief that its a big sham, but, for some odd reason, I felt compelled to vote in this year's presidential elections nevertheless. I'm not a voter, just like I'm not a smoker - I might do it occasionally if I feel compelled but it's not part of my lifestyle.

So why did I change my mind? Well, there's only one reason I could come up with; I got the voting fever!

At some point about 2 weeks before the election I became really hooked on all of the election polls and stories. I got suckered into all that - Joe the Plumber "hard-working American who worked hard enough to own his own business and doesn't want to be punished for it" and Bill Ayers, the "unrepentant domestic terrorist," Obama's association with the "voter-fraud organization" ACORN, Obama's "socialist" tax policies - all of which were complete bullshit, and all of which, oddly enough, were propagated by the Republican party and supported by McCain's campaign.

If you followed along and did that thing smart people do called "verifying facts", you found that Joe the Plumber was not whom he claimed to be and would have actually benefited significantly more from Obama's tax plan, Bill Ayers is a distinguished professor at the University of Illinois and had virtually no practical connection with Obama, ACORN is a respected voter registration organization, never convicted for any fraudulent crimes, and the "socialist" nature of Obama's tax plan which would "spread the wealth" only calls for a marginal 2% difference from McCain's tax plan.

Jesus Christ, these Republicans are dirty, filthy, lying, and manipulative bunch. In my mind, ACORN and Bill Ayers should have every right to sue the pants off these bastards.

What happened in the Republican party was another one of the reasons I didn't want to vote. The game is so f'd up. They kept pushing all of that bullshit and manipulated the voters to believe in it. Obama literally became a "terrorist and baby killer" in the eyes of some voters. One of McCain's attacks against Obama was "if you repeat lies over and over enough they'll eventually take it for the truth." to which I say "he who smelt it, dealt it."

All that aside, I realized that the Democratic party was doing none of those dirty things. Well, almost. McCain was throwing all his cards at Obama, playing guilt-by-association. The irony is that Obama played the guilt-by-association card which trumped them all - George W Bush.

Conclusion

So I went to the polls and got my vote on. I like how I had absolutely no way of verifying that my vote actually counted. After I filled in the circle (I voted straight Democrat) I put my ballot into the paper shredder... I mean... ballot box. (It sure felt like a paper shredder when I put it in). And into the void it went.

I have progressive friends in Oklahoma where I used to live. I feel sorry for them because Obama's no-smear message of hope never really penetrated out there... turns out Oklahoma was the dumbest state in the entire US - giving McCain the largest lead among any state at 32%. I wonder what it would have felt like to know when you vote for Obama, you ain't votin' for shit.

I don't know about you, but in my book winner-take-all is not a democracy, yet it is the biggest event of our democracy.
